Affordable Home Support

Better at Home is a program that helps seniors with simple day-to-day tasks so that they can continue to live independently in their own homes and remain connected to their communities. The Government of British Columbia funds the program, the United Way of the Lower Mainland manages it, and local non-profit organizations provide the services.

Better at Home is offered in 67 communities across BC and services vary from community to community. Examples of services include:

  • Friendly visiting
  • Transportation
  • Light yard work
  • Minor home repairs
  • Light housekeeping
  • Grocery shopping
  • Snow shoveling

Services are generally delivered by a combination of volunteers, paid staff and contractors depending upon the service required and the capacity of the program to respond. Seniors who receive these services will pay a fee based on a sliding scale according to annual income and ability to pay.  The fees that are charged are put back into the program to serve more seniors. Some services may be free such as friendly visiting.
